Beyond Balance: Embracing the Power of Work-Life Integration
I love to be called a ‘mother in science’ as it beautifully captures the two defining parts of my identity. Motherhood inspires me to excel and be a role model for my daughter. I believe these roles complement one another and that each equips me with skills that enhance the other.
A career in life sciences is rewarding but also demanding and requires curiosity, perseverance, and continuous learning. Like many women, my journey has included challenges, shifting priorities, and difficult choices. Over time, I have learned that success is not about perfection but about adapting with optimism, learning from experience, and moving forward with purpose.
I am often asked how one balances a scientific career with family responsibilities. Recently, I came across a phrase that resonated deeply with me: work-life integration. ‘Integration’ is not an individual action, but the collective support at home and work. At home, after-school care, domestic help, and automation of routine chores become critical. At work, equitable opportunities, flexibility, mentorship, and sponsorship empower us to contribute, grow and lead. Understanding during school events or periods of increased family responsibility can significantly enhance well-being and productivity. We are one person wearing many hats. Priorities change, and we must make purposeful choices while giving ourselves grace when things do not go as planned.
I have been fortunate to experience such an environment, first at Ignite Life Science Foundation and now at Sai Life Sciences, where I have been encouraged to grow professionally while embracing motherhood with confidence. One of my most memorable experiences this year was attending a conference at NIT Warangal with my daughter as a proud ‘mother Saimer.’ Watching her see my passion in science made the integration incredibly meaningful.
As the Indian ecosystem continues to move toward better work-life balance and parent friendly environments, we must mentor, support, and advocate for one another such that young women scientists can confidently wear many hats!
